Writing Workshops |
|
With nearly 20 years experience as an English teacher and an ongoing writing career covering web writing, feature writing and writing for children, I bring a unique voice and background to your students. I want to help students reach their writing goals whether they are writing mystery, fantasy, SF, fairy tales, poetry or literary fiction. Good writing is all about making sure that your message is clear to your readers—that they are making the pictures in their heads that you want them to make, that they are laughing when you want them to laugh or even crying or feeling afraid. With that as the benchmark for a successful writing piece, all writing skills and techniques are brought together to create an effective final product. I am a supportive and encouraging mentor who likes to raise the bar to encourage excellence and pride in the final product. Currently, I am also teaching business communication at Conestoga College.
For locations within a 1.5-hour drive of Kitchener, ON, I can come to your school for an initial meeting and workshop with the students and also return to host a final readings performance. For the 6-8 weeks in between, I will do two critiques of the work (15 pages max.) of up to 16 students, help them select the material they choose to present and give them tips on reading techniques for the final performance.
For locations more than 1.5 hours away, I can set up a blog so that the students can submit their work and pick up their critiques and have an ongoing dialogue about their work for a period of 6 to 8 weeks. We can also arrange a question and answer session on-line during class, so I can answer their questions about getting published or a career as a writer or other writing topics.

#2 Writing Dialogue—60-90 minutesFor Students, Educators, Writing Groups |
|
This hands-on workshop equips writers for creating 'fat-free' dialogue. Eliminate adverbs and bland verbs and write dialogue that develops characters and moves the plot along. Participants will write two unique scenes of dialogue by the end of the workshop. This is a challenging and instructive workshop for students, grades 8 and up, and for educators this is a great lesson to bring back to your classroom. This workshop will give your writers' group a boost of creativity and brush up their dialogue techniques. Resources and handouts are included. |
#3 No One Leaves Without a Story —60-90 minutesFor Students, Educators, Writing Groups |
|
This workshop guarantees that every participant will leave with some workable story ideas and perhaps even a beginning or two. Using various writing starters (including: pictures, postcards, word lists, and sentences) participants will fill up their creative reserves with hands-on brainstorming and creativity. This workshop can be used as a beginning-of-term blast into creative writing or to energize a mid-term slump or to tie in with current curriculum in other subjects such as social studies or literature. Writers' groups will have the fun of challenging their creativity and creating a pool of story ideas for future 'down times.' Educators will have a great hands-on experience and go back to their classrooms brimming with ideas and inspirations. Resources and handouts are included. |
